Alternatives to Public School in Orlando: What Parents Need to Know
A mom found me through a Facebook group.
She was at her wit'’ end. Her child was failing every class, completely checked out, and spending the school day drawing instead of doing any work. He had already decided he did not want to go to college. He was done with school, and he had not even gotten to high school yet.
But here is what she told me when she got to me. He was not a bad kid. He was not a lazy kid. He was a kid who loved gaming. He loved hands-on learning. He wanted to do things that excited him. And public school was not giving him any of that. Every single day was about preparing for a test. There was nothing that made him want to show up.
She found me because she was desperate. And honestly, she almost did not reach out because she assumed she could not afford a private school alternative.
She was wrong. And I am so glad she messaged me anyway.
What Public School Cannot Do No Matter How Hard It Tries
I want to be clear about something. I am not here to bash public-school teachers. Most of them are doing everything they can with what they have. The problem is not the teachers. The problem is the system they are working in.
Public schools cannot build a personalized learning path for every single child. It is not a matter of effort or caring. It is a matter of capacity. When you have 30 kids in a classroom and a standardized curriculum that every child has to get through before the end of the year, there is simply no room to teach each child the way they actually learn best.
So the kid who needs hands-on learning sits at a desk and listens to lectures. The kid who is advanced waits while the class catches up. The kid who has gaps falls further behind while the lesson moves on. And the kid who is bored, well, he starts drawing.
None of that is the teacher's fault. It is just what the system was built to do.
What Happened When He Came to Purpose Prep Academy
When that child joined us, everything changed.
Not overnight. But steadily. Consistently. He started opening up. He told me things his mom did not even know, nothing alarming, just the kind of honest conversations that happen when a kid finally feels safe somewhere. He started trusting us. He started trying.
By the time he left us for high school, he was a completely different kid than the one who walked in drawing in the margins of his notebook. He became such a believer in what we were doing that he wanted his friends to come to PPA instead of going back to public school.
That is not a small thing. A kid who was done with school before he even hit high school became a kid who wanted to share his school with his friends.
Most Parents Think They Cannot Afford It
This is the part I really want you to read
Most families who find us assume that alternatives to public school are out of reach financially. Private school feels like something for other people. But that is not the reality anymore, especially in Florida.
The Step Up for Students scholarship is available to Florida families and can be used to pay for private school tuition, including at Purpose Prep Academy. Many of our families use it and pay little to nothing out of pocket. If you have never looked into it, please do. It could change everything for your family.
And if in-person school does not fit your schedule or your location, our online academy brings the same personalized learning to your child wherever you are in the world. Student athletes, families who travel, kids who just do better learning from home. We have built a program that works around real life.
Your Child Does Not Have to Be Miserable at School
If your child is bored, checked out, anxious, or just not happy, that is not something to wait out. It is information. And you have more options than you probably realize.
Purpose Prep Academy serves K through 8 learners in person in the Winter Garden and Orlando area and K through 12 learners online worldwide. We accept the Step Up for Students scholarship and we would love to talk to you about whether we are the right fit for your family.
